Fire Safety Tips

The Department, with the assistance of BVI Cable TV, runs Fire Safety tips to educate the public in fire safety.

  • In case of fire, telephone the Fire and Rescue Department by dialing 999 or 911 and clearly state the location of the fire.
  • If a closed door feels warm don’t open it; fire could be behind it.
  • Close the doors of the room where the fire is located. This will delay the spread of the fire and smoke.
  • Close all doors. If there is a fire this will help to prevent spreading and protect your escape routes.
  • If you are cut off by fire, remember that smoke is as deadly as flames. Close doors and any other openings and seal cracks with bedding.

  • Don’t throw cigarette or pipe ash into waste paper basket.

  • Don’t plug any appliance into a light fixture.

  • Don’t overload your electrical outlets.

  • Don’t run electrical wires under carpets.
  • Have your electrical wiring inspected regularly.
  • Keep matches and lighters out of the reach of children.
  • Never throw a lighted cigarette out of a car window.
  • Smoke alarm can detect smoke from fires in their earliest stage and sound a warning alarm. They can give you those precious few minutes of warning, which increase the chances of you and your family getting out safely.

  • Don’t smoke in bed.

  • If an appliance smokes or has an unusual smell, unplug it immediately and have it repaired.
